How To Prevent Varicose Veins

June 12, 2017

It is undoubtedly important for individuals to maintain healthy veins in order for the body to function properly. This can become challenging as we age. Unfortunately, many women and men will experience some type of venous condition, such as, varicose veins or spider veins in their lifetime. Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that can cause pain and discomfort. Sometimes they are visible underneath the skin, other times, they are hidden.

Varicose veins are more than just an unsightly cosmetic condition. They can lead to long-term and dangerous health issues such as blood clots, leg ulcers, or even Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). Although varicose veins can be largely a hereditary condition, there are certain risk factors that can contribute to varicose vein conditions. By being aware of these potential contributors to varicose veins, you can potentially help to prevent varicose veins from occurring and/or worsening.

• Do not cross your legs for long periods of time.
• Elevate your legs whenever you’re resting or sleeping.
• Regularly exercise.
• Maintain a healthy weight.
• Eat a vein healthy diet.
• Avoid standing for long periods of time.
• Wear compression stockings.
• Avoid excessive sun exposure.

Concerned About Your Vein Health?

If you find your veins are worsening, becoming more prominent, or if you have an increase in discomfort, you should not wait and speak with a vein specialist. With vein disease it’s important to seek treatment sooner rather than later. Blood backflow and pooling of blood in the veins can create pressure that will cause your symptoms to worsen with time and can lead to complications. Take your health into your hands and request a consultation today.
